Turning a passion for dogs into a career that changes lives.

For Shea, a love of dogs and a desire to understand their behaviours has led to a rewarding career at the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS). Although she graduated with a degree in Kinesiology, her passion for helping dogs like her pet Junior led her to explore a different path. “I wanted to learn how to support him in living his best life,” she explains. “I didn’t want Junior’s struggles to limit his experiences, like enjoying the outdoors and new adventures.” This passion now drives her work as an Animal Behaviour Technician. “I strive to help the dogs in our care overcome obstacles, build confidence, and ultimately thrive in their adoptive homes.”
Shea’s Story
Shea’s journey at EHS began in 2020 with the Doggie Daycare, where she gained hands-on experience with dogs in a group setting. She then moved to Animal Care, developing a deeper understanding of their needs. Today, in the Behaviour department, Shea works with dogs facing behavioural challenges, helping them succeed in their new homes. “Every animal in our care has a unique story, and patience and empathy go a long way in helping them thrive.”
One memorable experience for Shea was when the team rallied together to search for an escaped shelter dog, Moe. “It was incredible to see so many staff and volunteers dedicate their time to finding him,” she recalls. “Everyone coordinated efforts, shared updates and worked tirelessly together with the shared goal of bringing him to safety. It was truly inspiring to witness such compassion and teamwork.”
“Being surrounded by such a hardworking team makes coming to work every day so rewarding.”
Shea values the culture of collaboration and compassion at EHS, which extends to both the animals and the people who support them. “Teamwork makes the dream work,” she says. “We collaborate across departments to give our animals the best care possible.” While Shea acknowledges that the work can be stressful, she finds joy in working alongside a compassionate and dedicated team. “Being surrounded by such a hardworking team makes coming to work every day so rewarding.”
Knowing that she’s part of something bigger keeps Shea motivated. “EHS strives to set a high standard for animal care, behaviour support, and welfare,” she says. “I love that we have that goal, and it inspires me to do my best every day.”
Through Shea’s dedication and the collaborative spirit she embodies, EHS is fostering an environment where staff and volunteers can flourish—all while making a meaningful difference in the lives of both people and companion animals.
