A helping hand to keep a family whole.

For Vanessa, her pets are more than just animals—they’re family. “As an only child to a single mom, pets were my siblings, my best friends,” she recalls. Over the years, her home has been filled with rescued cats, dogs, birds and small animals, each one a beloved companion.
Vanessa’s Story
The past five years have been especially challenging for Vanessa. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she underwent multiple surgeries and treatment. She also faced the sudden loss of her mother and the passing of two elderly pets. Through it all, her pets, especially her dog Prancer, have provided unwavering support. “My furbabies know me better than I know myself! They sense my emotions before I even get my shoes off when I get home,” Vanessa explains. She recalls how, during particularly tough moments, Prancer would try to lick her tears away, bringing comfort and even laughter. “They knew what to do when I cried.”
As Vanessa navigates life on long-term disability following her diagnosis, she found herself facing financial constraints. When she discovered EHS’ Pet Pantry program, she was overjoyed to find a source of support. “When I was accepted into your program, I sincerely cried for a half hour straight!” she says. “It felt like my mom had a hand in it all.”
The program has been a lifeline, ensuring that her pets always have access to nutritious food and treats. “Your program offers food and treats that I can’t afford,” Vanessa says. The assistance has allowed her to continue providing for her pets, ensuring they have the stability and care they deserve. Bringing home the monthly supply is a highlight for her pets. “My furbabies love the variety and absolutely know when I’m bringing the food in that it’s for them!”
“Never be embarrassed, be proud of yourself for keeping your pets.”
Vanessa is deeply grateful for the support she’s received from EHS, not only for the Pet Pantry but for the kindness and professionalism shown by the team. “You have made a HUGE difference in our lives!” she shares. She hopes her story encourages others facing similar challenges to seek assistance. “Never be embarrassed, be proud of yourself for keeping your pets.”
Through programs like the Pet Pantry, EHS works to prevent animal homelessness and ensure that pets like Prancer remain in loving homes, where both people and pets can benefit from the strength of their bond—no matter the challenges their guardians face.
