Dr. Michelle Meckelborg, EHS Shelter Veterinarian & Director of Animal Health, has been a veterinarian for 20 years and has seen her share of suffering. This case, endured by Hank and the other dogs that came to our shelter with him, will rank high on the list of the most distressing.
We won’t show you photos of these dogs because it’s so upsetting.
But this was one of the largest numbers of distressed animals to come to the Edmonton Humane Society in recent years. Fifty terrier mixes, puppies and older dogs. Each of them had major health issues.
We were shocked when we saw them. They were scrawny, smelly and scared. And in a lot of pain.
But we started helping them instantly.
The Importance of Hope: Hank’s Story
When Hank and the other 49 dogs were taken out of a private home by one of our partner agencies, they’d been caged in the backyard, neglected and mistreated. Most had severe infections and diseases. As you can imagine, few things are better than rescuing a traumatized animal. Restoring them to health. And finding a family who will love and care for them.
This is only a good news story because of our generous EHS supporters. They help turn tragedy into hope.
You see, forty of the dogs needed serious dental care. Many had ear infections. Almost all required spaying or neutering. Dozens had lice and an internal parasite, giardia. They were in pain. Since most of the dogs were fearful, they needed anti-anxiety medications while at the shelter. But they were soon on the road to recovery.
This story has three heroes. The people who rescued them from the backyard. The generous families who gave them a home. And our donors who make all this love and care for neglected and homeless animals possible.
Hank, and most of these 50 dogs, are already in caring homes. These dogs deserve a good life. You help make that happen with your gifts.
Hank now lives with his new family. He has come to love them just like they love him. His guardian said when he first came to stay with them, Hank was very timid and chose their spare bedroom as a place to sleep. She slept in there with Hank every night for about a week. “Then Hank started coming into our bed with us. That was a big step,” she says.
