When Dr. Michelle Meckelborg, EHS Shelter Veterinarian & Director of Animal Health, showed us the dental x-rays for Beau, a two-year-old tabby, it was shocking.
As you can see from his picture, Beau is a beautiful animal. When he came to us, he needed urgent surgery for an abscess. Sadly, that’s common for abandoned animals.
But, when we looked at Beau’s dental X-rays, we found small fragments glowing brightly on the dark screen.
They were bullet fragments! And they were in his skull. We can’t imagine the suffering he endured.
It’s a miracle Beau is still alive.
Thankfully, a kind person found him and brought him to us. They rescued him from a tragic death on the streets.
And thankfully, your past support gave us the resources to be there for Beau when he arrived at our shelter. Our team repaired his damaged teeth, treated his ear mites and extracted the bullet fragments from his brain.
Today, we hope you’ll consider another gift to the Edmonton Humane Society to help this life-saving work, to help another animal like Beau.
Every day, our shelter receives cats, dogs, rabbits, and other animals who need help. We know you agree that every animal deserves a good life and you give that better life to them. A future full of food and comfort. Love and care.

We’re delighted to tell you that sweet and loving Beau is living his best life. Like all cats, he loves a tasty treat. Right now, Beau probably is meowing, asking his adoptive family for his favourite treats. And, of course, he’s probably enjoying one right now. You made Beau’s new life possible.
You know, many people deserve thanks for safeguarding animal lives. The volunteers at the shelter, the foster guardians, our vet staff and front-line workers. Every person in the shelter, from the cleaners to the admin staff. They all love animals. They all play a part.
But honestly, you are the most critical person caring for these furry friends.
Without your gifts and the kindness of others, our shelter would not exist. You provide the medicine for surgeries. You help buy food for our animals. You help us find safe homes for these wounded animals so they can heal, love and be loved.
